Secrecy, cunning and a plan made in hiding.
Meaning
The Seven of Swords is about tactics, secrecy and the question of how much cunning is acceptable. Someone avoids the direct route. Instead of asking, things are taken; instead of arguing, people dodge; instead of speaking openly, plans are made behind the scenes. The Seven puts the element of Air to the test: the mind is agile enough to get round any rule, but not every way round is wise.
You meet this card when you avoid a confrontation and think up an elegant solution instead. It shows up when someone around you is not playing with their cards on the table. And it shows up when you catch yourself holding back information, telling half-truths or arranging things so that they fit conveniently.
The Seven of Swords does not pass a blanket judgement. There are situations in which discretion and a strategic approach are right. But it asks about the motive and the price. The two swords left behind remind you that cunning rarely gets you everything. The card invites you to check where you are making yourself smaller than you are by sneaking away instead of facing up to things.
Advice: Be clever, but not underhand.
Reversed
Reversed, hidden things come to light. A plan is uncovered, a secret bursts into the open, or you decide yourself to put your cards on the table and confess something you have kept quiet about for a long time. That can be unpleasant, but it brings relief, because the energy that went into hiding is set free.
Sometimes the reversed Seven also shows the opposite: a deception aimed at yourself. You paint things in a rosier light than they deserve, invent reasons why everything is fine, and don’t notice that you are pulling the wool over your own eyes. The card invites you to take honest stock: where are you dodging, where are you telling yourself a comfortable story, and what would happen if you simply told the truth?
Love and relationships
In love the Seven of Swords shows a lack of openness: things are kept quiet, feelings are disguised, conflicts are sidestepped. This doesn’t have to be cheating, but it is a form of distance. In a partnership it is worth asking what you don’t talk about and why. If you are single, the card can mean that you are not fully showing yourself, or that the other person isn’t. Trust does not grow out of tactics, but out of the courage to be clear.
Work and money
At work the Seven of Swords stands for strategy and diplomacy, but also for caution: not everyone is being honest, and not every advantage you could gain will hold up in the long run. Watch out for information that is being routed past you. With money, the card advises being wary of offers that sound too clever and being transparent about your own agreements. Check everything yourself before you sign.
As the card of the day
Today it is worth looking at where you are bluffing your way through. Is there a conversation you are avoiding, a task you are quietly leaving undone, a half-truth you are telling right now? Pick one of these things and bring it into the open. And if someone behaves oddly towards you, feel free to ask what is behind it.
The image
Against a bright yellow sky a man tiptoes out of a military camp. He wears a red cap trimmed with black fur, a brown smock, grey-blue hose and red boots. In his arms he holds five swords by the blades, so clumsily that he could easily cut himself. Two swords stand upright in the ground behind him; those he had to leave behind. On the right colourful tents with flags can be seen, and in the distance on the left a group of small figures and a cloud of smoke, perhaps guards by a fire. He looks back over his shoulder with a grin. The scene is comical and embarrassing at the same time: the trick has half worked, and the price for it is secrecy.
