Meaning
The Knight of Swords charges off. He has recognised what needs to be done and does it, directly, quickly and without detours. He stands for determination, courage in conversation and the ability to represent a position clearly. As the second court card of the Swords, he embodies the element of Air in its most active form: thinking that turns straight into movement. His strength is his speed; his weakness is his speed too.
As a part of your personality, you meet him when you finally act after long hesitation, when you don’t mince your words in a debate, or when you stand up for something that matters to you. As someone around you, he is a person who talks fast, decides fast, drives fast and rarely asks whether everyone is still keeping up. Life with him is never boring, but sometimes exhausting.
The Knight of Swords invites you to set your clarity in motion and stop waiting until everyone agrees. At the same time he asks whether you know where you are riding to, and what you are trampling on the way. Direction and force are good. A quick glance to the left and right makes them better.
Advice: Be direct, but not hurtful.
Reversed
Reversed, determination becomes haste and directness becomes recklessness. You rush ahead without thinking, pick fights for the sake of fighting, or steamroller people with arguments that may be right but achieve nothing because no one is listening any more. Sometimes the reversed card also shows the opposite: the Knight sits in the saddle and can’t get going, because he gets bogged down in planning or shies away from the first step.
As someone around you, the reversed Knight can be a person who escalates conflicts, puts on pressure or pushes you into decisions you are not ready for. The card invites you to take the pace down without standing still: check the direction first, then ride. And if you are attacked, you don’t have to accept every battle.
Love and relationships
In love the Knight of Swords stands for stormy directness. Someone says clearly what they want, and that can impress or overwhelm. In a partnership he brings open words and quick clarification, but also the risk that words move faster than feelings. If you are single, he can point to a person who comes into your life with a lot of energy. Ask yourself whether pace and depth go together.
Work and money
At work the Knight of Swords shows phases in which quick action is called for: negotiations, presentations, a position you have to defend, a project that needs momentum. You can push a lot through now if you know the direction and bring the others along with you. With money, the card warns against hasty decisions; look at offers calmly, even if you are being pressured. What you sign is your own responsibility.
As the card of the day
Today is a day for getting stuck in. Tackle the thing you have been putting off for a long time and deal with it head-on. Say clearly what you mean, but first listen briefly to what the others have to say. Take care in traffic and with quick decisions. Speed is your friend today, as long as you keep hold of the reins.
The image
A knight in full armour charges across the picture to the left on a light grey horse, his sword raised high. A red plume streams from his helmet, a red cloak flaps behind him, and the saddlecloth is decorated with yellow butterflies and red birds. The horse’s mouth is open, its legs are stretched wide, its mane is flying. The sky is blue with ragged white-grey clouds that, like the rider, seem to race from right to left; at the left edge trees bend in the storm. The ground is barely visible, only a strip of yellowish-brown earth. Everything in this picture is movement, direction, speed. The butterflies and birds point to the element of Air; the storm shows how much force a thought develops when it turns into action.
