Success that brings security.
Meaning
The King of Pentacles stands for success that has come to rest. He has built up, secured and expanded, and now he sits in his garden, surrounded by what his work has produced. As the most mature court card of the Earth suit, he combines possessions with responsibility: for him, prosperity is not an end in itself but a foundation on which others can stand.
As a part of your personality, he shows the side of you that gets things running and keeps them running. You think in structures, you know how to handle money and resources, you are generous when it makes sense, and you enjoy what you have earned. Typical situations: you are responsible for a business, a team, a family, a set of assets. You are asked how something can be done on a solid footing. Or you have reached the point at which you can stop fighting and start shaping.
As a person around you, the King is an experienced, reliable person with influence: a mentor, a boss, someone with business sense who radiates security and passes it on to others. The card invites you to acknowledge your own success and to ask what you want to use it for. Prosperity that benefits no one remains mere possession. Prosperity that supports others becomes influence in the good sense.
Advice: Enjoy your success and share it.
Reversed
Reversed, the King hardens. Success turns into materialism, security into obstinacy, care into control over everything that belongs to him, people included. The card can show someone who only thinks in figures, who confuses status with worth, or who uses his power to keep others small. The opposite occurs too: a King who loses his ground through recklessness, extravagance or because he is resting on past successes.
Turned inwards, the reversed King describes the fear of not being enough if you have nothing to show for yourself. Ask yourself whether you need possessions to feel safe, or whether you can also find security within yourself.
Love and relationships
In love, the King of Pentacles stands for a partner who offers stability: generous, faithful, sensual and not much interested in drama. In a relationship, he shows a phase in which reliability and shared enjoyment take centre stage; he invites you not to confuse care with control. If you are single, he can herald a mature, grounded person, or your own wish to be that safe place for someone else.
Work and money
At work, the King of Pentacles shows business sense, sound leadership and success built on experience. He suits phases in which you take on responsibility, create structures or use your influence to give others solid ground. Where money is concerned, he stands for overview, foresight and moderation, not for risk. The card describes an attitude, not a strategy; you decide for yourself which steps to take, and on bigger questions you get expert advice.
As the card of the day
As the card of the day, the King of Pentacles invites you to act from abundance today rather than from lack. Make a decision with a steady hand, take responsibility for something entrusted to you, and be generous where it is well invested. In the evening, treat yourself to a conscious pleasure. And take a moment to look at what you have already built before you plan the next thing.
The image
The King sits on a black throne whose back and base are carved with four bulls’ heads; a garland of red roses winds over the backrest. He wears a dark robe covered in green vine leaves and grapes, a red hood, a crown of leaves with red flowers and a golden chain. In his right hand he holds a golden sceptre topped with an orb; his left hand rests on a large golden coin with a pentagram, which stands upright on his knee. An armoured foot peeps out from under the hem of his robe. Behind him lies a wall, on the right a castle with grey towers and red roofs; the sky is yellow. The King is almost at one with his garden; only the armour is a reminder that this prosperity once had to be defended.
