Memories that warm the heart.
Meaning
The Six of Cups leads you back to what shaped you. It stands for memory, childhood, familiarity and a kind of generosity that expects nothing. After the loss of the Five, it is a comfort: there were times when you were safe and sheltered, and that experience stays with you.
As a Six, it brings harmony back into the water, though of a backward-looking kind. The card turns up when someone from your past gets in touch, when you sort through old photos, return to a place where you used to live or do something again that gave you joy as a child. It also appears when you look after someone weaker than you, or when you yourself are in need of that kind of care right now.
The invitation is to consciously take the good things from the past with you and make something of them for today. Which people carried you back then? Which ability, which sense of humour, which curiosity have you lost along the way? The card does not want a return but a connection. Ask yourself what you would give today to the child you once were, and whether you could not simply give it to yourself.
Advice: Take the good things from the past with you without staying there.
Reversed
Reversed, memory becomes a trap. You compare the present with a gilded past in which everything was supposedly better, and in doing so you miss what would be possible today. Old family patterns repeat themselves without your noticing, or you wait for an apology that will probably never come.
Sometimes the reversed card also shows the opposite: a childhood you don't like to think about, and the need to look at it honestly at last instead of glossing over it or pushing it away. In both cases, it helps to ask what you really need from the past and what you may leave there. Letting go is no betrayal of what was.
Love and relationships
In love, the Six of Cups stands for familiarity, tenderness and the feeling of being at home with someone. If you are single, it can show an old flame or a reunion, sometimes also someone who reminds you of an earlier time. In a relationship it invites you to remember the beginning and to offer each other small kindnesses for no particular reason. Just check whether you love the person or the memory of them.
Work and money
At work, the card points to contacts from earlier times: former colleagues, old clients, a mentor who gets back in touch. Often it also stands for work with children or for activities that link up with an early enthusiasm. With money, it can hint at a gift, an inheritance or support from the family; how you handle it remains your responsibility. Nostalgia alone, however, is not yet a business model.
As the card of the day
As the card of the day, the Six of Cups invites you to pick up a thread leading into the past. Today, call someone you haven't spoken to for a long time, or do something that used to give you joy. Give someone a present for no particular reason. And look kindly on the child you once were.
The image
Two children stand in a village courtyard with half-timbered houses and a fortified tower. The taller child, in a red hood, blue tunic and red stockings, bends down to the smaller one and hands over a golden cup in which a white, star-shaped flower is growing. The smaller child wears a red headscarf over a spotted dress, with a white mitten, and looks up. Four more cups with the same flowers stand in the foreground, one of them on a stone pedestal bearing a shield with a diagonal cross. On the left, a small guard with a pike walks away up a flight of steps. The sky is bright and clear. The flowering cups show feelings that have had time to grow; the gesture of giving stands for affection without ulterior motives, the courtyard for security and roots.
