Many dreams, no decision yet.

Meaning

The Seven of Cups shows a wealth of imaginings: wishes, fantasies, fears and temptations stand side by side, and all of them look equally real. The card is not against dreaming. It merely shows that at the dreaming stage nothing has been decided yet, and that you can linger there for a long time without taking a single step.

As a Seven, it brings restlessness into the water of the Cups. After the familiarity of the Six, the world grows wide again, perhaps too wide. Typical situations are phases of life with many options and no clear direction, daydreams of a different life, infatuations that attach themselves to an idea rather than to a person, or projects that have long been finished in your imagination while the first line is still missing. Self-deception belongs here too: you see what you want to see.

The card invites you to bring one cup down and look inside. What is really in it, and what have you only imagined into it? Which wish remains when you spell it out soberly, with all the effort and all the consequences? Imagination is a good starting point. A decision makes it fruitful.

Advice: Choose one cup and check what is inside.

Reversed

Reversed, the fog clears. The clouds disperse, and of the seven cups perhaps two remain that are truly worthwhile. You recognise an illusion for what it is, say goodbye to a dream that was never viable, and feel how much lighter that makes you. Decisions come more easily now because the choice has become honest.

Reversed, however, the card can also show an escape into the world of imagination that has become entrenched: endless planning without putting anything into practice, distraction by screens, a retreat into stories because reality seems too grey. Then ask yourself which small, concrete step would bring you down from the clouds and back to the ground today.

Love and relationships

In love, the Seven of Cups shows projections and infatuation. If you are single, you may be falling in love with an image you have formed of someone, or keeping so many options open that none of them turns into a real connection. In a relationship it points to unspoken fantasies or to comparisons with an ideal partner. Look at the person in front of you, not the one you picture in your mind.

Work and money

At work, the card stands for too many options and too little focus: several business ideas, applications in every direction, plans that grow with every conversation. Check what is viable before you spread yourself too thin. With money, it urges caution towards anything that glitters and promises quick profit; if something sounds too good to be true, read the small print and ask someone who knows the field. You are responsible for your own decisions.

As the card of the day

As the card of the day, the Seven of Cups asks you for clarity. Today, write down everything you are wishing for right now, and then honestly cross out whatever you merely find appealing without really wanting it. Make one small decision instead of keeping every door open. And today, be wary of anything that promises you great happiness without any effort.

The image

A dark silhouette stands with its back to the viewer, reaching out a hand towards seven golden cups that float on grey clouds against a light blue sky. Each cup holds something different: at the top, a head with curly hair, a veiled figure in a red halo of rays and a snake winding over the rim; below, a castle on a rock, a heap of sparkling jewels, a laurel wreath on a cup on which a skull can be made out, and a blue dragon. None of it stands on solid ground. The faceless silhouette is anyone who faces too many possibilities; the clouds say that these are imaginings, not reality. The skull beneath the laurel warns that fame, too, has its price.

Questions for you

  • Which of my wishes stands up to a sober look, and which does not?
  • Where am I dreaming because it is more comfortable than deciding?
  • What am I seeing right now the way I want to see it, and not as it is?
