The ships are on their way, and soon you will see results.
Meaning
The Three of Wands shows the moment after the decision. You have acted, sent something out, committed yourself, and now you are watching how it unfolds. As the third card of the Fire sequence, it brings the first proof that the impulse holds: the spark and the plan have become a movement that carries on without you. The ships are out at sea. You cannot row them, but you can keep the harbour ready.
In life this corresponds to phases in which you have sent off applications, made an offer, made an investment or had a conversation, and are now waiting for a response. It is an active kind of waiting, not a passive one. You keep a lookout, prepare the next step, stay in touch. Often the card shows that results come from further afield, from circumstances you don’t fully control, and that this is exactly where their opportunity lies.
The Three of Wands invites you to keep your horizon truly wide. Don’t just expect the result you planned, but stay open to whatever else comes back as well. Ask yourself what you have already set in motion, and whether you are ready to let it arrive.
Advice: Keep your eyes on the horizon.
Reversed
Reversed, things take longer than expected. The ships fail to appear, answers are delayed, obstacles crop up that weren’t part of the plan. Perhaps the plan was too short-sighted, perhaps a piece of information was missing, perhaps you counted on partners who don’t pull their weight. The disappointment is understandable, but it is no verdict on the direction.
Turned inwards, the reversed Three of Wands shows a gaze that is glued to the horizon and overlooks what is close at hand. You wait for the big thing and miss the small signs of response that are already there. Ask yourself whether you are really still watching or merely hoping, and what you can adjust yourself right now.
Love and relationships
In love, the Three of Wands often shows a connection across a distance or a relationship whose next development is still on its way. If you are single, you may have sent out a signal and be waiting for an answer; the card invites you not to freeze while you wait. In a relationship it is about shared plans that need time to bear fruit: a move, a long-distance relationship, a new chapter of life you are preparing right now. Patience here is not standing still.
Work and money
At work, the Three of Wands stands for growth, trade and contacts that reach beyond your usual radius: customers in other regions, partnerships, projects with a longer lead time. The first results of your work are becoming visible, even if the harvest isn’t fully in yet. With money, the card shows that investments need time and that you should keep an eye on how things develop without getting nervous. Expect developments that you don’t steer on your own.
As the card of the day
As your card of the day, the Three of Wands invites you to take stock today of what you have already sent out. Which emails, applications, ideas are on their way? Follow up where it makes sense, and leave alone whatever needs its own time. Look ahead and prepare what you will do when the answer comes.
The image
A man stands with his back to us on a rocky height, looking out over a sea that glows yellow. He wears a red robe with a chequered band and a green cloak over it, with a narrow headband in his dark hair. Three wands with fresh leaves are planted in the ground around him, and he grips one of them with his right hand. The whole sky is golden yellow, the water mirrors this light, and on its surface small ships can be made out, sailing off into the distance or returning from it. Pale mountains are outlined on the horizon. Because we cannot see his face, our gaze is drawn to where he himself is looking: outwards, at what is under way. The wand he holds shows that he has chosen his standpoint deliberately.
