Meaning
The Eight of Wands shows that things have started to flow. After the standstill of defence on the Seven, something comes loose, and suddenly everything moves fast: answers arrive, decisions are made, appointments crowd together, journeys are on the horizon. As the eighth card of the Fire sequence, it is energy in its purest form, with no figure and no obstacle, only direction and speed. You have let go, and now it is flying.
In life it shows up in phases when something long in preparation is suddenly released: the acceptance comes, the parcel is delivered, the message you have been waiting for is in your inbox. Communication plays a big part, as do changes of place and everything that connects across distance. It is a good time to deal with things that need momentum, and a bad time to hesitate. Whatever you set in motion now arrives quickly.
The Eight of Wands invites you to make use of the tailwind without spreading yourself too thin. Eight wands, one direction: that is the difference between momentum and rush. Ask yourself what is currently in motion and where it is aimed, and whether you are ready when it lands. Then act swiftly, but with an eye on the ground.
Advice: Use the momentum while it lasts.
Reversed
Reversed, the movement stalls. Messages are delayed, journeys are cancelled, a process that should really be quick gets stuck somewhere. This may be down to outside circumstances, or to too many things being under way at once and blocking each other. The opposite also happens: rush without direction, frantic activity in which the wands fly in every direction and mistakes happen because nobody is looking any more.
Turned inwards, the reversed Eight of Wands shows impatience and restlessness born of waiting. Ask yourself whether you can really speed up the standstill, or whether the time would be better spent sorting out what is actually meant to fly.
Love and relationships
In love, the Eight of Wands stands for a fast coming-together, messages and spontaneous passion. If you are single, an encounter may gain intensity surprisingly quickly, or messages may fly back and forth before you have even properly got to know each other. In a relationship it shows new momentum, trips for two, clarifications that suddenly become possible. The card invites you to communicate openly and directly, while checking whether the pace feels right for both of you.
Work and money
At work, the Eight of Wands shows rapid progress: projects move forward, feedback arrives, decisions are made swiftly, business trips or long-distance contacts increase. It is a phase in which you can get a lot done if you stay organised. With money, payments or answers you have been waiting for may arrive; even so, quick offers deserve just as careful a look as slow ones. Speed is no substitute for care.
As the card of the day
As your card of the day, the Eight of Wands invites you to send things off, get things done and set things in motion today. Answer the messages that have piled up, make the decision you have put off, get out of the house. Expect responses to come faster than you thought. Keep a clear direction, and the momentum will carry you through the day.
The image
Eight wands fly diagonally through a clear blue sky, from top left to bottom right, all parallel, all with fresh green leaves. They seem to be about to land, their tips tilting towards the ground. Beneath them lies a peaceful landscape: green hills, a broad river winding through the plain, and on a rise to the left a small building with a tower. No figure is to be seen, no one who might have thrown the wands or be waiting for them. The picture is one of the few in the Waite-Smith tarot that shows pure movement. The parallel wands speak of a force with a shared direction, the open sky of an unhindered course. The river below takes up the movement and carries it onwards.
