Meaning
The Five of Pentacles shows lack. In every suit the Five brings a crisis, and in the element of Earth it strikes the tangible: money, health, shelter, work, belonging. After the security of the Four comes the moment when the wall no longer protects but shuts out. You are standing outside, and inside the light is burning for others.
The card describes phases in which something is missing that belongs to life. That can be a real financial squeeze, an illness, the loss of a job or of a home. Often, though, it is just as much about the feeling: not belonging, not keeping up, standing there empty-handed while others seem to be well provided for. Shame often comes with it. The two figures do not look up, and perhaps that is the real pain: help would be closer than they think, but they don’t ask.
The Five of Pentacles invites you not to hide lack. Acknowledge what is really missing, without dramatising it and without smiling it away. Then look for the light near you: people, organisations and offers of help you can turn to. The card shows a hard stretch of road, but it also shows that you are not walking it alone.
Advice: Ask for help; the door is open.
Reversed
Reversed, the tide begins to turn. The worst of the cold is over, a squeeze eases, you find work, support or simply a place where you belong again. Often the decisive step is that you accept help you previously turned down out of pride or shame.
But the reversed Five can also show that hardship is being pushed aside: you act as if everything were fine and keep walking through the snow, even though you have been freezing for a long time. Turned inwards, it describes an inner sense of poverty that no longer has anything to do with outward circumstances. Ask yourself which door you are walking past right now.
Love and relationships
In love, the Five of Pentacles shows loneliness or the feeling of standing there empty-handed. If you are single, it can describe feeling shut out, as if closeness were something for other people. In a relationship, it stands for hard times that you are going through together, or for a coldness that has settled between you. It invites you not to hide, but to say what you are missing and to listen to what your partner is missing.
Work and money
At work, the Five of Pentacles shows insecurity: a squeeze, a dismissal, commissions that fail to come in, or the worry of no longer being needed. The card describes the situation, not how long it will last. What it suggests is sober realism: get a clear overview of what is missing, and seek advice from people and organisations that are there for exactly that. What you actually do remains your decision and your responsibility.
As the card of the day
As the card of the day, the Five of Pentacles draws your attention to a lack that could make itself felt today: energy, money, care, belonging. Don’t walk past it with your head bowed. Resolve to ask for something just once today, even if it is only for advice. Also keep an eye out for people beside you who are missing something; sometimes you are the light in the window.
The image
It is night, and thick snow is falling in front of a dark wall. Above, a colourful church window glows: five golden coins with pentagrams, arranged like the branches of a tree, entwined with green leaves and red flowers, set in yellow and blue glass. Below, two figures make their way through the snow. In front, a man on crutches, his leg bandaged, in a blue smock and a red cap, with a small bell around his neck; behind him a woman in a tattered red cloak, barefoot, her head bowed. Both walk past the window without looking up. The light is there, but they don’t notice it or don’t dare to go in. In this scene the coins are out of reach; they belong to the lit room, not to the two outside. This very distance is the theme.
